Academic writing
Academic writing is an approach to writing that is used in the academic community to write term papers, final and graduate theses, scientific articles and dissertations, university textbooks. It is characterized by systematicity and concision, as well as the support of allegations with evidence. Writing academic papers is preceded by research, which requires knowledge of literature searches (more on the pages of the FCEAG Library). The briefness of academic writing is also reflected in the structure of the paper, which includes four chapters: introduction with description of the topic, applied methods, description of results and discussion. For those who want to know more about all the stages of successful academic writing, starting from defining the topic, through literature research to paper design, argumentative writing style and correct citation and referencing, detailed instructions can be found in the booklet Academic Writing by Vanja Pupovac (free access here).
Citation & Referencing
In every academic work, knowledge and results published in other works are used. In the text, it is necessary to mark the parts that have been downloaded and indicate the source, which is what we call citation. At the end of the paper, a list of all sources is compiled in the form of bibliographic records, which we call a list of references or a list of literature. Correct and complete citation is extremely important because it clearly separates the parts of the author's work from those that have been taken over and thus unambiguously ensures authorship. Absence of citation, intentional or unintentional, results in the appropriation of someone else's author's part, which is called plagiarism. Plagiarism is avoided by correctly citing, paraphrasing and referencing the sources used. What and how to cite and more about citation styles is described in the booklet Academic writing by author Vanja Pupovac (free access here).
Plagiarism check
Plagiarism is considered the most serious violation of academic ethical principles, it is the misuse of someone else's author's work. Plagiarism most often refers to copying parts of other people's works or research results, including graphic representations, such as graphs and pictures. There is also self-plagiarism when you reuse your own previously published ideas and research results without citing the source.
The FCEAG Code of Ethics, the Rulebook on Disciplinary Responsibility of FCEAG Students and the Rulebook on Disciplinary Responsibility of FCEAG Employees consider plagiarism a disciplinary offense for which sanctions are provided.
At FCEAG, regulations and protocols on final theses, graduate theses and doctoral theses include a mandatory check of originality/plagiarism control through the Turnitin system. Instructions, access and user support for the Turnitin system can be found on the website here, and the system is freely accessible to all students and teachers of the faculty through electronic identities from the AAI@EduHr system.
